How It Works

CDC guidelines for breastmilk storage: room temp up to 4 hours, fridge up to 4 days, freezer up to 6-12 months. Always label bags with the date. Not medical advice -- when in doubt, throw it out.

The Formula

Room temp (77F): up to 4 hours
Insulated cooler: up to 24 hours
Refrigerator (40F): up to 4 days
Freezer (0F): 6-12 months
Deep freezer (-4F): 6-12 months

Variables

  • CDC guidelines — Centers for Disease Control storage recommendations
  • 25 oz/day — Average daily breastmilk intake for babies 1-6 months

Example

4 oz bag in the fridge for 2 hours = safe, 94 hours remaining before the 4-day limit.

Tips

  • Store milk in the back of the fridge, not the door (more consistent temperature)
  • Label every bag or bottle with the date expressed
  • Never refreeze thawed breastmilk
  • Thawed milk should be used within 24 hours
  • It is normal for stored breastmilk to separate -- gently swirl to mix
