How It Works

Baby teeth (deciduous teeth) typically begin erupting around 6 months, starting with the lower central incisors. All 20 primary teeth are usually in by age 2.5-3. Teething varies widely -- some babies get teeth at 4 months, others not until 12+ months. Not medical advice.

The Formula

Typical eruption order:
6-10 mo: Central/lateral incisors (8 teeth)
13-16 mo: First molars + canines (8 teeth)
23-25 mo: Second molars (4 teeth)
Total: 20 primary teeth

Variables

  • 20 teeth — Total number of primary (baby) teeth
  • 6 months — Average age for first tooth (wide range: 4-12 months)

Example

8-month-old: likely has 2-4 teeth (central incisors), next up are upper lateral incisors around 9 months.

Tips

  • Cold teething rings and gentle gum massage can soothe teething pain
  • Avoid teething gels with benzocaine (FDA warning for children under 2)
  • Start brushing with a rice-grain-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste when first tooth appears
  • Schedule the first dentist visit by age 1 or within 6 months of first tooth
  • Late teething (no teeth by 12 months) is usually normal but mention it to your pediatrician
